Dr Dominik Bauer
Conservation Capacity Lead
Dominik is Conservation Capacity Lead at Lion Landscapes, where he focuses on building strategic partnerships with likeminded organisations and growing local capacity for carnivore conservation across Sub-Saharan Africa. Drawing on over 15 years of experience in African large carnivore conservation, his current work centres on the organisation's mentorship programme, supporting mentee organisations and strategic collaboration frameworks that connect Lion Landscapes with aligned conservation efforts across the region.
Dominik's career spans site-based research to regional and transboundary conservation strategy. He began as a field researcher studying leopard and lion ecology in Botswana and South Africa, before joining WildCRU at the University of Oxford, where he managed the Trans-Kalahari Predator Programme and later carried out postdoctoral research using large-scale camera-trapping data. He went on to lead WWF Germany's lion programme and worked on its Eastern and Southern African portfolio. At Jamma International, he worked on cross-partner conservation initiatives and as a consultant for ZSL completed a Southern African regional strategy assessment for cheetah and wild dog conservation across five KAZA countries before joining Lion Landscapes.
He holds a PhD in Zoology on landscape-scale lion conservation across the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, and an MSc in Biology. He has published widely on lion and leopard ecology, habitat selection, and connectivity, is a longstanding member of the African Lion Working Group, formerly led the KAZA Carnivore Conservation Coalition's focal working group, and is an assessor on Oxford's Recanati-Kaplan Postgraduate Diploma in International Wildlife Conservation Practice.
A German national who spent many years living and working in Botswana before settling in London, Dominik's connection to conservation was shaped by years in the field among the wildlife he now works to protect. Outside of work, he can usually be found in his wood workshop or with his wife and their Miniature Pinscher, Twiglet.
