World Lion Day: Help Make Coexistence Work

Lions face deadly threats outside protected areas. Your support helps protect them, and the people who live alongside them.

Will you help make coexistence work; for lions, for people, for the future?

Why lions need your help

Lions are most at risk outside protected areas. When livestock are attacked, people often retaliate and lions are killed. Conflict is real wherever lions share the land with people and livestock, and both wildlife and livelihoods suffer as a result.

One lioness. One defender. A powerful act of protection.

When lions entered a grazing area near people's homes, Darem and his team stepped in.

“We stayed there so that anyone coming to hunt would find us instead, and the lions were safe.”

- Darem Filipo, Lion Defender

Lion Defenders like Darem are on the frontlines, protecting wildlife, resolving conflict, and helping people keep their livestock safe.

Preventing retaliation is just one part of what Lion Defenders do. Darem and his colleagues also work directly with livestock owners, investigating why predation happened, advising on how to prevent future attacks, and helping to safely dispose of carcasses to avoid retaliatory poisoning. They treat injured livestock, retrieve lost animals, and help reinforce livestock enclosures. They also work with local warriors to reduce cultural lion hunts, which were a major concern in Ruaha in particular, but have declined significantly thanks to the Lion Defenders.

These practical, on-the-ground efforts support both people and lions, and help reduce the risk of future conflict.

This is just one example of how our 64 community liaisons - Lion Defenders, Lion Extension Officers, and Conflict Officers - are making coexistence possible.

Will you help make coexistence work, and keep lions roaming wild?
Your donation today will support a range of long-term solutions that protect both lions and people across the landscapes where we work.

Thank you for standing with us this World Lion Day
